Avreml, the thief with a pure soul

Avreml is RIGLI's Russian version of a famous Yiddish ballad by Mordechai Gebirtig, a carpenter and poet of Krakow. It gives voice to a street orphan who grew into a thief with a code: he never steals from the poor, only from the fat and stingy rich, and he asks that his gravestone tell the truth about the man he was.

Olga Anikina's Russian keeps the whole arc, tender and bitter at once, down to the epitaph Avreml writes for himself: here lies a thief, yet a man of great breadth and a pure soul, who might have been an obedient son had life let him.

Why bring it into English

A song this human deserves to be understood, not only heard. Carrying Avreml into Russian and English lets the orphan speak for himself to a new listener, which is the whole reason Jewish Songs for All exists.

The words, line by line

Russian (Olga Anikina)English, line by line
In childhood I was left all alone
Without kin I wandered the streets
I was thirteen years old then
In the cold I warmed myself in dens
I grew as I could by the laws of the street
On the street now I have no equal
Yes, I am Avreml, the best thief around
The devil is no brother to me, my brother is lucky chance
For a crust of bread I went to prison the first time
And there I quickly understood what was what
I do not steal at the market like a tramp
But beware if you are rich and a miser
My lucky star is with me
Avreml is a thief but a fine fellow all the same
The poor sometimes fed me
The fat purses beat me without mercy
And so I grew and grew up at last
Grew a thief, so the pious say
A thief, so a thief, yet I am sure it is still
Better than a grabber and a scoundrel
Yes, I am Avreml, a thief and an honest lad
The rich quarters fear me
Though behind bars there were days to weep over
The rogue and trickster came out free
I will not steal from a poor man's pocket
But I will steal from a fat fool
My lucky star is with me
Avreml is a thief but a fine fellow all the same
But not for long did the fellow tap his heels
Now you heal from beatings, now from consumption
How much is measured out, God knows
If the time comes for me to lie in the earth
Write on the gravestone
In gold, so everyone can read
Here lies Avreml, he did not live very long
But still he was not the least before God
He was a man of great breadth
A thief, yet with a pure soul
Had he not grown up like a dog under a fence
He would have become an obedient son, not a thief
Then the gravestone would have read
Here lies a different Avreml, a fine fellow all the same
